This internship at Georgian Aviation University was one big remarkable story that gave us a lot of benefits to our aviation future!

Paulius Lašas, VILNIUS TECH Antanas Gustaitis Aviation Institute

We started our internship at Georgian Aviation University at the beginning of July. The staff met us cheerfully by inviting us to meet with the Dean of engineering faculty. We had an opportunity to explore the main facility of the university and get familiar with their equipment and study etic. At the end of the walkaround, the chance of trying out the flight simulator was given to us. It was a fun experience to learn from the Georgian pilot, who had a lot of flight hours in his pocket. After a couple of days, we started working on old aircraft Boeing 737-200 in the hangar at Tbilisi airport. Firstly, we had work safety instructions and a human factor lecture for the understanding of our work preciseness and importance. Later on, we were taught about aircraft certifying agencies, such as EASA, and their role in aviation. Moreover, we learned about the essential documents of aircraft. For example AMM, MEL, IPC, and so on. After some theoretical knowledge, we were ready to do some practical tasks. So we started working with the aircraft maintenance manual of Boeing 737-200. Mostly, the objects were to find some task card number on the AMM, print it out, and try to do it step by step, of course with very helpful and instructive professor supervision. After we removed some parts from the plane, we went to class to hear a precise explanation about those parts' purpose in the aircraft and back to install it again. So we had various and number of these tasks. For example main engine ignition plug – removal/installation, Control pressure panel – removal/installation, Artificial horizon – removal/installation, APU ignition plug – removal/installation, Pitot tube – removal/installation, Total air temperature – removal/installation, Passenger seats – removal/installation, Flight data recorder – removal/installation, Air data computer – removal/installation and so on. Also, we were taught how to lock wire properly. On the last day of the internship, we had an exam. It consisted of some individual tasks which we covered before and one task was for the whole group.

During this internship, we had a couple of visits to Georgian aviation companies: Geosky and Easycharter. Thanks to these companies, we had an opportunity to inspect and get familiar with Boeing 747 and Airbus 300. Also, Easycharter staff taught us how to inflate/deflate aircraft tires and shared their personal stories and tips. Moreover, during one of the visits we participated in the main landing gear wheel – removal/installation of the Airbus 300. It was a wonderful, real life experience to watch and help aircraft maintenance staff. In addition, we watched and were instructed how to do pushback to the airplane.

Last of all, at the end of our internship we took a trip to Telavi airport where is a hangar with small two-seated airplanes such as Aeroprakt-22. We were very lucky to have the chance to fly on these aircraft. The mountains nearby were eye catching things to see and I had the honor to control an airplane for a little bit! After landing, we had a short walk around in the hangar and an inspection of Aeroprakt-22.

To summarize, we had an extraordinary opportunity to have this kind of internship. We learned a lot and, in my view, became better future aviators. Also, we enriched our understanding of aviation in general, deepened our knowledge about aircraft maintenance, learned how to use various tools. During our stay, we improved not only the English language but also Russian. Furthermore, the internship had a good balance between work and free time in which we had a chance to explore this gorgeous country.

First of all, we were introduced to the university‘s hangar, where are two planes. We worked with the bigger one, Boeing 737-200. We were introduced to this plane, its components, panels, cockpit, fuselage, etc. We were able to try opening the plane‘s doors by ourselves, check the aircraft‘s compartments. In the class, our lecturer presented the logbooks of internship work, told what it is and what should be filled in it. Furthermore, we were introduced to the safety of working with the airplane, human factors, EASA, and ICAO regulations. Moreover, we were taught how to do the pre-flight inspection of the airplane. Furthermore, we started to do some tasks related to the aircraft. Before that, we got to know where are required tools are located, what are the correct names of them. We were separated into groups, I was in group A. Then we started to do some tasks. We did them in this order: first – we were given a task title (for example Nose radome) and had to search on the computer, in the AMM (Aircraft maintenance manual) for removal/installation of that task. Then after we printed it, we had to follow the manuals to locate that object and get to know what kind of tools we need. After that, we started to follow the instructions in the manuals to remove that object and after some explaining from the lecturer about that component‘s purpose in the aircraft, its working principle, we started to install it back by following the manuals. When we were finished with our task we had to put every tool in the place and then we had to fill the form of the task we did. So by following this order of work, we did a lot of assignments. We did tasks such as opening the nose radome, to see the weather radar, in the cockpit we removed and installed a pressure control panel, artificial horizon, heading indicator, airspeed indicator. In the fuselage, we worked on the emergency lights battery, opened the emergency doors, removed and installed seats, windows, lights, voice recorder. Removed/ installed air data computer, static discharge wicks, logo lights, flight recorder, learned how to do wire locking with the special tool. Also, we removed and installed the igniter plug of the APU (Auxiliary power unit), main engines igniter plugs, tachometer generator, worked on the cowling of the engine, and more. There were days when we had an opportunity to visit some Georgian companies like Easy Charter and Geo sky. We could inflate an aircraft‘s tire, get to know how to change a tire, were introduced to Airbus 300 and Boeing 747. It was an extraordinary opportunity to see those big aircrafts. The staff of those companies presented the components of those airplanes and we definitely will not forget this occasion. When our internship went to the end, we were said that we will have a skill test of the tasks we did. So after some preparation, we did a test in which we had one personal task, one task that we only had a title of the task and we needed to search in the manuals the task card number and one teamwork task and it had to be performed by 3 persons. Moreover, we had to do a pre-flight inspection of the specified area of the aircraft. So everything went well, there were no difficulties because I did some preparation.

After all of the work, we had a tour to the Telavi airport, which belongs to Georgian aviation university. There we had a chance to fly with the instructor in Aeroprakt A-22LS. It was a remarkable experience to fly with this aircraft in an astonishing landscape near the mountains. After we landed, the working staff of the hangar introduced us to the aircraft, showed the areas in the hangar where tools, equipment, components stay. So it was also a marvelous experience during this internship.

To sum up, this internship at Georgian Aviation University was one big remarkable story that gave us a lot of benefits to my future. I broadened my horizons in aviation, learned new words, and met a lot of good people. Without internship work, I had a chance to explore a new country – Georgia, which has a very beautiful nature, friendly and hospitable people, and very appetizing food. It was a stunning experience.

On July 1st we came to Georgia, Tbilisi. In the morning we had a warm welcome from the Georgia Aviation University. The Dean of the university greet us, gave us a tour of the university and around it. Explained about our incoming internship, told us about their university, a little bit about their past, how Georgian Aviation University started to work with our Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. We had a chance to fly with a simulator inside the university. On the next day, we went to the Tbilisi International Airport. There we met with other students who are studying in Georgia. After we got our airport entry passes we went to the hangar. There was Boeing 737-200 plane and this was the plane where did all our internship.

First, when we came to class, we had lectures about all the paperwork, the human factor. Later on, our supervisor presented our logbooks. He introduced us to all the tasks we have to do while we are in this internship, showed us whats needs to be filled. After the lecture, we were divided into smaller groups and went for Boeing 737-200 visual inspection. The supervisor told us how to do it, where to start, what to check in every step. After visual inspection, we were introduced to Boeing 737-200 Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM). We learned how to use it, how to find all needed incoming tasks. In the AMM we had to find the task card number of given tasks, print it, and do the task step by step how it is written in the manual. After we took out some parts from the airplane we had to bring them in class and our supervisor explained how it is working, why we need that specific part in the plane, and then go back and install it again as it was before. After that, our supervisor checked our work and if there were mistakes he told us. We did various tasks, for example: Total air temperature – removal/installation, APU ignition plug – removal/installation, Pito tube – removal/installation, Passenger seats – removal/installation, Air data computer - removal/installation, Main engine ignition plug - removal/installation, Flight data recorder - removal/installation, Emergency exit doors - removal/installation, Control pressure panel - removal/installation and so on. We learned how to do a proper wire lock. On our last day of the internship, we had an exam. We had to do one individual task and one in a group. All exam tasks were from what we have learned during the time in the hangar.

During our internship, we had a few visits to Georgian aviation companies like Geosky and Easycharter. During those visits, we had a chance to inspect Boeing 747 and Airbus 300. Easycharter company taught us how to inflate and deflate aircraft tire, took us near Airbus 300 aircraft, and showed us how to replace the main landing gear wheel. We were so lucky to see in person how the staff works. On the same day, we were able to see how the aircraft is being pushed back for its flight.

At the end of our internship, we took a trip to a small Telavi airport. They had a couple of two-seated airplanes like Aeroprakt – 22. We had an opportunity to see a beautiful landscape from the air. I was out of my words when I saw those big mountains around the airport. After me and my pilot landed, we had a small tour in their hangar, he explained about their workplace, about their facilities, and of course about their Aeroprakt – 22 planes.

To summarize, we had an excellent opportunity to participate in this internship. We learned a lot about
aircrafts, enriched our knowledge about aviation in general, learned how to use various new tools. During our visit, we also enriched our English vocabulary and for me a bit of Russian! Also, we were able to see a new culture, beautiful cities, mountains, taste Georgian food.
